According to James Schutz, marketing man for Transcend, the coffee shop and roaster will be taking over the old Axis cafe location at 10349 Jasper Avenue, probably by February 1st. Schutz says that after a few minor renovations, including a fresh paint job, the cafe will open as Transcend's third location.
While this looks like a bit of a quick move for Transcend, having just opened their Garneau location last spring, it's been floating about for a bit, says Schutz.
"We were thinking we'd like a downtown location, maybe a year from now," he explains.
But then the Axis space became available and it was too good an opportunity to pass up. At the same time, Schutz says the roasting facility in the Argyll location is moving and a kitchen space will be added. Barista Chad Moss, also a Red Seal chef, will be running this operation, which aims to produce some specialty breads (under the doughology of Jeff Johnson), as well as some South American street foods such as empenadas and pupusas.
"The idea is to replicate the food that (Transcend staff) have experienced while sourcing green coffee," says Schutz.
Watch for more deets later. The photo at right was taken by the Journal's John Lucas and is of the Transcend location in Garneau.
